Mortlach was founded in 1823 by James Findlater in the Speyside town of Dufftown. The town is home to six distilleries now, but Mortlach was the first legal distillery there. It is named after the local Mortlach parish and church. The whisky has long been admired for a robust and complex character, partly attributed to an unusual 2.81-times distillation regime. Mortlach has been a key component of Johnnie Walker and has been since the 1920s. It is owned by Diageo. In recent years it has been repositioned more aggressively as a single malt, where its weight, richness and savoury depth distinguish it sharply from lighter fruity Speyside styles.
