Speyburn was founded in 1897 by John Hopkins & Co. in the Speyside town of Rothes. The company included brothers John and Edward Hopkins, plus their cousin Edward Broughton. It was built as part of the late-Victorian whisky boom and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of distillery architect Charles Doig. The distillery is owned by Inver House Distillers, who have owned it since 1991, and produces a light, approachable Speyside style. Its role in blends has long been significant, particularly Inver House’s Hankey Bannister, but it has also built recognition as a single malt. The brand has grown massively in the last decade.
