Aultmore was founded in 1896 by Alexander Edward and is near the town of Keith. He already owned the fellow Speyside distilleries of Benrinnes and Craigallachie at that point. The spirit produced there has long been used in the Dewar’s range of popular blends. It became part of John Dewar & Sons in 1923. For much of its history it remained relatively obscure as a single malt, despite strong regard within blending circles. Aultmore is known for its clean, grassy Speyside character, and remains a ‘hidden gem’ amongst whisky drinkers. The name comes from the Gaelic An t-Allt Mòr, meaning ‘big burn’. This refers to the nearby stream that serves as the distillery’s main water source.
