Glenglassaugh was founded in 1875 and is near the town of Portsoy on the Moray Firth coast. It was closed for long periods across the 20th century (1908-1931 and 1936-1960) before a final closure in 1986. The distillery was revived in 2008 after a 22-year absence and later acquired by the BenRiach Distillery Company in 2013. In turn, this was purchased by Brown-Forman in 2016. Its stunning coastal location and renewed emphasis on maturation and branding have helped Glenglassaugh develop a distinct identity. The whisky is often associated with a gentle coastal style, combining fruit and sweetness with a maritime edge. Glenglassaugh translates as ‘glen of the green grass’ from local Gaelic.
