Laphroaig is one of Scotland’s most famous distilleries and is on the southern coast of the famous whisky island of Islay. It was founded in 1815 by two brothers – Alexander and Donald Johnston. The single malt brand has become the world’s most recognisable and biggest selling in the peated style. Its powerful medicinal smokiness has made it both polarising and iconic. The distillery passed through several ownership changes and is now part of Suntory Global Spirits. Laphroaig’s deeply distinctive character, iconic branding and long history have helped secure its status as one of the defining names of Islay whisky. One of the few distilleries in Scotland to malt some of its own barley.
