Royal Brackla was founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser. It is on the Cawdor Estate near the Highland town of Nairn. In 1833 it became the first distillery to receive a Royal Warrant from King William IV, earning the right to use the Royal prefix. Only one other in Scotland that remains in operation can do the same – Royal Lochnagar. The distillery has passed through several ownerships and been expanded and modernised in the two centuries since. Royal Brackla is currently owned by John Dewar’s & Sons, which is the Scotch whisky arm of Bacardi. The spirit is largely used by blenders, but a small core range of single malts exists under Bacardi’s Last Great Malts brand.
