Tomatin was founded in 1897 by the Tomatin Spey Distillery Co. It sits north of the town of Aviemore and south of the city of Inverness. The distillery has historically produced whisky for blending but has more recently also become known for its single malt range. This comes following significant work by owners Takara Shuzo, who were the first Japanese company to own a Scotch whisky distillery when they took control in 1986. Tomatin is known for its soft, gentle and fruity style. It was also one of the first distilleries in Scotland to begin finishing and experimenting with unorthodox cask types for maturation. They also distil a peated spirit for part of the year, which is released as Cù Bòcan.
