The Speyside village of Aberlour is dominated by two buildings, which sit at opposite ends of its main street – the Walker’s shortbread factory and the Aberlour distillery. The distillery was founded by local banker and entrepreneur James Fleming in 1879. He was a highly influential figure in the village – he funded the building of a hospital and school there, which both still hold his name, and introduced electricity to selected buildings, including the distillery. Aberlour is one of the world’s best-selling Scotch single malts and is known for its use of ex-sherry cask maturation. It is particularly popular in France and other European countries and is a highly regarded and multi award-winning malt.
