Ardbeg was founded in 1815 by John MacDougall on the famous whisky island of Islay and has earned a devoted following for its intensely peated and complex spirit. The distillery suffered long periods of underuse and near closure, particularly in the 1980s and early 1990s, before being revitalised in 1997 when purchased by Glenmorangie plc. They are now part of Moet Hennessy. The Ardbeg Committee was formed in 2000 and is now the world’s largest brand owned whisky club. Ardbeg’s house style combines heavy smoke with a surprising lemon-like citrus and sweetness, and the brand has become one of the most prominent and collectible in modern Scotch whisky.
