Balblair is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and one of just a handful still in operation that were founded in the 18th century. It was established by John Ross in 1790, close to the north Highland town of Tain. Balblair was owned and operated by the Ross family for over a century. A period of instability followed under new ownership. The distillery was closed in 1911 and remained so due to the two World Wars. It finally reopened in 1949. Now owned by Inver House Distillers, Balblair is somewhat of a ‘hidden gem’ distillery and is known for its sweet and fruity spirit. A lovely traditional distillery in a gorgeous location, next to the North Highland Inverness to Thurso railway line.
