The Speyside distillery of Balmenach was founded by James MacGregor in 1824. It grew from a small illicit farm distillery that he operated on his Balminoch Farm. The whisky produced there is known for its heavy and savoury style and is highly regarded amongst blenders. These characteristics give blends added depth and complexity. Owners Inver House Distillers use Balmenach to such effect in their popular Hankey Bannister blend. There are no official bottlings from the distillery on the market, but it occasionally appears on the independent bottling scene. One such bottler releases it as a ‘Highland single malt’ 12 Years Old under the Deerstalker name. Balmenach is also where Caorunn gin is produced.
