The Ben Nevis distillery is in the west Highland town of Fort William. It is situated at the base of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1,345 metres high (4,413 feet). The distillery was founded ‘Long’ John McDonald in 1825 and remained in the McDonald family for over a century. In the late-1870s their whisky was so popular that they built an additional distillery next door. These were merged into one in 1908. Ben Nevis spirit is largely used in blends and offers a rich, oily and lightly peated style. A small core range exists and has a cult following. The distillery is owned by Nikka. The Japanese whisky company were one of the first foreign owners of a Scotch distillery when they took over in 1989.
