Benriach is in Speyside, just south of the City of Elgin. It sits next to the A941, one of the main roads that goes deeper into the famous whisky region. The distillery was founded in 1897 as part of the late Victorian whisky boom. It was established by John Duff, who owned the neighbouring distillery of Longmorn, and which can be seen. The two were connected by a single-track railway for much of the history. Benriach closed shortly after opening in 1900 and remained closed for 65 years. Only the malting floor was operational during this time and supplied malted barley for Longmorn. The distillery reopened in 1965. Annual production of peated spirit began in 1972, giving Benriach the oldest smoky stock in Speyside. It is owned by Brown-Forman.
