Benrinnes distillery was built at the foot of the Ben Rinnes mountain in Speyside. It was founded by Peter McKenzie in 1826 and was originally known as Lyne of Ruthie distillery. The distillery has a chequered history littered with catastrophic events – it was destroyed by a flood in 1829, after which it was rebuilt and named as Benrinnes, and ravaged by fire in 1896. The modern distillery is owned by Diageo and used to add weight and structure to several blends, such as Johnnie Walker. Only one core bottling exists, and this sits within Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range, which has a culkt status amongst whisky drinkers. One of the few distilleries remaining in Scotland that have wormtub condensers.
