Craigellachie is in the Speyside village of the same name and was founded in 1891 by Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward. This was during a period of rapid late Victorian expansion of distilleries in Speyside. It was built to supply single malt for Mackie’s popular White Horse blend. The distillery has retained several traditional production features and is one of the few in Scotland to still use worm tubs condensers. This is said to contribute to its bold and sulphury character. Now part of Bacardi’s Scotch whisky wing, John Dewar’s & Sons, and is a major ingredient in their range of blended whiskies. That said, Craigellachie is recognised as a single malt, prized for a robust and old-fashioned style.
