Fettercairn Distillery was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay. He converted a former corn mill into a distillery, and it is close to the small town of Laurencekirk, between Dundee and Aberdeen. It was the second distillery, after The Glenlivet, to take out an official License to Distil following the introduction of The Excise Act in 1823. The original name was Old Fettercairn. Former owners include Sir john Gladstone, father of former UK Prime Minister William Gladstone. It has been owned by Whyte & Mackay since 1973 and has grown a fine reputation for its tropical fruity single malts. The only place in Scotland that has cooling rings attached to the necks of its stills, which run water down the outside to increase reflux.
