Glen Moray began life as a brewery on the outskirts of the City of Elgin. The Elgin West Brewery, which dated from 1830, was converted into a distillery in 1897. Glen Moray’s early history was hounded by financial issues. After several ownership changes and a long association with Macdonald & Muir, the precursor to Glenmorangie plc, it was acquired by French drinks group La Martiniquaise in 2008. Under their ownership both the distillery and sales have grown massively, particularly at the approachable end of the market. Glen Moray has become known for approachable Speyside single malts and frequent use of innovative cask types for finishing and maturation experiments.
