The Glenlivet was founded in 1824 by George Smith. At the time it was the first legal distillery in Scotland after the introduction of The Excise Act in 1823 by the UK Government of the day. The distillery’s early success was so influential that many other distilleries later used the 'Glenlivet' name with their branding. This only stopped as recently as the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Glenlivet has become one of the world’s largest and best-known single malt brands. It regularly sits in the Top 2 for world sales alongside Glenfiddich. It has long been part of Chivas Brothers and is one of Scotland’s largest distilleries. The Glenlivet’s house style has helped define the modern image of Speyside single malt.
