The original Jura distillery was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell and was named Small Isles. This was in reference to the several small islands found in Craighouse Bay, which the distillery overlooks. It is on the Hebridean island of Jura and only became known as Jura when rebuilt in 1963. Renowned distillery architect William Delmé-Evans was commissioned to design it. The distillery had closed in 1901, and much was dismantled. It stayed like this for over 60 years until local landowners and residents supported its revival as a means of sustaining the island community. Jura is part of Whyte & Mackay, and they have significantly grown the single malt brand in the last two decades.
