North British was founded in Edinburgh in 1885 by a consortium of blenders seeking a secure supply of single grain whisky for their brands. It remains one of Scotland’s largest grain distilleries and is jointly owned by Diageo and the Edrington Group. The distillery is in the Gorgie area of the city, next to Heart of Midlothian’s Tynecastle stadium. While rarely encountered as a single grain in mainstream markets, it plays a major role in Scotch blending. It is estimated that over 10% of all Scotch blends contain spirit from North British and it produces a staggering 60 million litres per year. The distillery’s scale and strategic importance make it one of the key engines of the Scotch whisky industry.
