Tamnavulin was one of the distilleries built in the whisky boom of the 1960s when demand was so far outstripping supply that new facilities had to be constructed. It was built by Invergordon Distillers and production began in 1966. Invergordon was purchased by Whyte & Mackay in 1993. A couple of years later and with the whisky market in steady decline, it was mothballed. It would only reopen after 12 years of closure in 2007. The distillery’s main function remains as a blenders malt with its spirit being a major ingredient in the Whyte & Mackay blended range. The company have also put significant effort into establishing Tamnavulin as a single malt brand over the last decade and with huge success.
