Teaninich

The Highlands

Established 1817

This north Highland distillery does things differently and is renowned by blenders across Scotland.

Teaninich is in the north Highlands, close to the village of Alness on the Cromarty Firth. The distillery was established in 1817 by Captain Hugo Munro, who owned the local Teaninich estate. Teaninich translates as ‘house of monks’ from Gaelic and refers to a nearby ruined monastery. Now a large distillery, it is owned by Diageo. Most of the whisky produced there is used in blending. The weighty spirit adds structure and depth to Johnnie Walker in particular. It was also the first distillery in Scotland to install a hammer mill, rather than the traditional roller mill, and mash filter, rather than a mash tun. Both are more commonly found in the brewing industry.

Spirit Character
