Tobermory was founded in 1798 on the Isle of Mull and is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries. It is one of the few that remain from the 18th century. The original name was Ledaig, which is now used for the distillery’s peated single malt releases. Its history includes numerous closures and reopenings, reflecting the difficult economics of island distilling. These include 1930 to 1972, 1982 to 1989 and most recently 2017 to 2019. Today it is owned by CVH Spirits. The distillery’s island setting helps shape an unpeated maritime and coastal character. The peated Ledaig bottlings outsell the unpeated Tobermory ones by 2:1, despite being produced for less time each year.
